Veterinary technician is a four-year vocational secondary education programme leading to the vocational baccalaureate. Students in the veterinary technician/technician programme at BIC Ljubljana gain practical experience in real learning environments, including the first school veterinary clinic in Slovenia. The dispensary is open to the public, allowing students to receive high-quality practical training in the real-life conditions in which they will work in the future. Students monitor the health of their pets under the supervision of Doctors of Veterinary Medicine.

Certificate holders will be able to: recognise the needs of animals and their proper care and transport, provide technical veterinary care of animals, perform laboratory research from the taking of samples to producing reports, prepare animals for procedures and care, and inform owners about them, assist in diagnostic procedures and surgery, administer medicines, assist in running a veterinary pharmacy, work in reception and directing of clients, show a humane attitude to animals, communicate in a business situation (with owners of animals and co-workers), work in a group and use information and communication technologies, protect human and animal health, protect the environment and rationally use natural energy sources and raw materials, observe safety, hygiene and other regulations, assure the quality of procedures carried out, Elective: raising, protecting the health of and caring for small animals (carnivores, rodents, reptiles, ornamental birds and fish), recognising deviations from the physiological state and taking appropriate action, advising animal owners regarding the care and tending of small animals, performing insemination of bovines and pigs, supervising and assisting in births and caring for new-born animals and the mother, caring for horn growths, checking milk. Certificate holders supplement their key vocational knowledge and abilities with key general knowledge in line with national standards.
