Ireland: AgriNext Incubator Hub Empowers Multifunctional Farmers
19. 3. 2026
The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) in Thurles, Tipperary is almost at the end of its AgriNext Incubator Hub pilot programme which is helping farmers explore innovative multifunctional farming opportunities. The aim of the programme is to equip farmers with the confidence and tools to develop new income streams and sustainable farm enterprises.
The first incubator phase ran from September to December 2025 and prepared the farmers involved to progress into the practical application stage.
A variety of practical business startup type workshops were held at the Thurles Chamber Enterprise Centre, (TCEC). The pilot group includes 16 mainly farmers from all over the country and using blended learning, in person and online evening meetings were also included, and this brought the group together more frequently in a more practical way for busy people. The online sessions were an educational mix of professional speakers from finance supports available to wellbeing and successful business owners from various farming backgrounds. The personal stories of how they navigated the challenges while diversifying from their farming business helped the group get relevant sound advice from similar business owner’s experiences and it gave a supportive space for questions and answers and a chance for each of the group to contribute from their unique experiences and ideas. This practical learning model helps everyone develop and improve their ideas as they collaborate and share knowledge.
As the programme is progressing, participants are improving their business ideas while gaining practical skills in entrepreneurship, innovation, and farm diversification. They are exploring a wide range of multifunctional farming initiatives, including agritourism, farm education, direct sales, food processing, biodiversity projects, social farming, and renewable energy while strengthening their networks.
For TUS the insights gained will guide the future growth of the AgriNext Incubator Hub, further promoting innovation and resilience in multifunctional farming. Our aim is to help participants turn their innovative ideas into sustainable, thriving farm businesses.
