From Idea to Reality: Promoting Multifunctional Agriculture with the AgriNext Incubator – IES Galileo Galilei
1. 7. 2025
The Multifunctional Agriculture Business Incubator arises from the AgriNext project. The idea is to integrate various stakeholders who can add value to the incubator, such as farmer and rancher associations, official organizations, banks, cooperatives, chambers of commerce, foundations, to name a few. Most of these stakeholders are represented in the incubator's own board.
Regarding the organization of spaces, several alternatives were considered to adapt the physical space, and in the end, it was decided to use four spaces within the IES Galileo Galilei. The first of these is an entrepreneurship classroom, where activities related to promoting initiatives that foster entrepreneurship among the students of the center had previously been carried out. The other three spaces (after analyzing all possibilities) will consist of two classrooms on the main floor of the main building, one of which has high visibility at the entrance. A third classroom on the first floor is intended to be used by startups/companies that will be able to operate autonomously in the near future.
The adaptation of the spaces has been and will continue to be carried out in two spaces that are yet to be remodeled, with changes to the doors, fixing the classrooms (floor, walls, and ceiling), and including digital screens, work tables, and meeting tables to allow multifunctional use.
Regarding the anticipated impact on the target community, the goal is first and foremost to offer a series of services that were not previously available to interested individuals, such as online training, workshops, and training capsules. Perhaps more importantly, it aims to provide support from institutions like the chamber of commerce, banking entities, associations, and cooperatives that will bring interested parties closer to the world of multifunctional agriculture and rural development.
Additionally, there is an intention to create a robust job portal that will connect agricultural technicians with companies and entrepreneurs who decide to implement multifunctional agriculture policies within their businesses.
Reflecting on this, the vocational education and training Spanish system focuses on the students' formative period but "disappears from the scene" once they graduate, offering little attention thereafter. The AgriNext Incubator in Spain aims to provide attention to these technicians during the early phases after graduation, offering them all kinds of support to help them develop initiatives that empower rural areas.
Another feature of this incubator will be its offering not only at the local level but also at the national level. IES Galileo Galilei, as the driving force behind the incubator in Spain and a member of the National Network of Centers of Excellence for Vocational Education and Training, has a mission to innovate and help other centers in the development of training and the creation of synergies for employment in the Agro-food sector. In this sense, meetings have been held with the leadership of other agricultural educational centers across Spain, with the intention of expanding it to all vocational education and training centers that offer agricultural programs in Spain. These centers have been offered the opportunity to collaborate in the AgriNext incubator, the job portal, as well as other inter-center collaborations aimed at improving the quality of teaching and the employability of both intermediate and higher-level technicians from each center.
In addition to the above, and just as importantly, since it is promoting multifunctional agriculture, contacts have been established with other educational centers, both public and private, that offer courses that add value to the philosophy of Multifunctional Agriculture. Collaboration proposals have been made with centers offering courses related to renewable energy, tourism, hospitality, marketing and other centers focused on promoting social welfare in disadvantaged rural areas.
Another aspect being promoted, and where inquiries have already been made, is the creation of a database of companies to mentor in multifunctional agriculture. People interested in improving their professional skills in a specific aspect or activity will be able to collaborate with various companies involved in quality activities related to multifunctional agriculture and rural development. For example, agreements have been made with companies promoting the "farm-to-table" philosophy, as well as with restaurants based on local productions, which can generate ideas and synergies with interested individuals. The idea is to establish a variable training period during which participants will collaborate and learn in the mentor companies, with mentorship and supervision by the incubator staff.
As for the training activities that will be developed, there are several options. On one hand, there will be the creation of training or explanatory videos on important aspects of multifunctional agriculture and rural development. Educational guides on Rural Development and Multifunctional Agriculture will also be created, focusing on specific productive activities so that companies or individuals interested in a particular activity can gain insight into the most relevant aspects and begin their initiatives. Weekly workshops are also planned, which will be recorded and made available to the public on the AgriNext platform. These workshops will cover topics ranging from how to create small photovoltaic installations to business management in multifunctional agriculture, local product stores, marketing, and positioning in digital markets, among others.
In conclusion, the AgriNext Incubator initiative in Spain seeks the transversal collaboration of all actors who can add value to it, without losing sight of the target groups, which include students, technicians, teachers, agricultural entrepreneurs, associations, and cooperatives that may benefit from the actions carried out within the incubator.
